Frequently Asked Questions

How does my first class work?

Please try to arrive 15 minutes early so that you can meet the coaches, sign a waiver, change, get shown the space and be ready to train in time for the start of the class.

What do I wear?

Firstly please remove footwear before stepping near or on the mats. Always wear footwear when going to the bathroom. We recommend bringing some sliders/sandals to use at the gym, you are welcome to leave these at the gym too!

Please remove all jewellery and piercings, as they present a safety hazard to you and your training partner.

Note: Nails on both fingers and toes must be trimmed. This means short enough that the top of the finger is visible. Long manicures and false nails are not suitable for BJJ for safety and hygiene reasons.

If you are attending your first Gi class, and you have a Gi please wear it. You are welcome to wear any color of Gi you prefer. If you do not have a Gi you can borrow one of the gym loaner Gis until your purchase your own. We also usually have a few Gis for purchase at the gym, if interested speak with a coach!

If you are attending a NoGi class, please ensure your clothing is free from anything dangerous that may scratch (pockets, metal, zippers, buttons, etc).  Shorts or leggings and a fitted t-shirt or rashguard are suitable. We also sell club rashguards at the gym, if interested speak to a coach!

Is BJJ a good way to get fit/exercise?

100 percent! BJJ is a fun and dynamic style of exercise that will increase your muscle tone, coordination, cardio, flexibility, balance, and will help reduce body fat. Just remember to start slow and take every session and roll at your own pace, we’re here for a long time and a good time.

How much is the training?

We offer a two week free trial for new members coming to regular classes. We recommend our 6 week beginners course for those new to the sport (can find more info on our beginners course section).

Our membership section outlines all our pricing options, our monthly memberships are taken via direct debit and we pride ourselves on not roping students into dodgy long term contracts with hidden fees and charges!

I’m a woman: Is BJJ right for me?

BJJ is an excellent choice for women, especially for its self-defense and fitness aspect. Our gym also prioritises a friendly atmosphere and sense of community between all its members.

Jiujitsu trains us to utilise leverage and specific techniques to help us close the gap against more physical opponents.

Unlike other martial arts the training itself is not overly aggressive with punching and kicking rather controlled and fluid with the goal to logically apply techniques taught in live scenarios.

Is there any age restrictions?

Currently we only have classes for Adults over the age of 17 however we hope to start kids and teens classes soon so get in touch to register your interest if this applies.

For Adults there is no limits, we have members in their late teens all the way to their 50s. All of which see huge benefit from their training.

Is everyone welcome ?

We accept drop ins and visitors from all gyms and affiliations, just get in touch to organise dropping down so the coaches know to expect you and to help you find the space !

Do you have a uniform policy?

Bar having clean appropriate gear (Gi for Gi class, shorts and a rashguard for NoGi) for class there is no forced policy. We sell Gis and club rashguards you can buy to support the gym but anything goes.
